Water Colour Brushes

Water colour brushes are designed to control the flow of colour. The perfect brush will have a fine point, the ability to hold and evenly control colour and should be able to spring back into shape after every stroke.

Remember that being an artist means being creative with all of you painting tools. These categories are only a guide to what paint is suitable for each brush. Don’t be afraid to use your brush with any paint/medium to create you unique finish.

Sceptre Gold II for Water Colour, Acrylic & Oil Colour

The perfect mix of sable and synthetic giving the performance of sable at the price of synthetic. Sceptre Gold II is a range of high quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for working with water colour and fluid oil colour but are also suitable for use with acrylic, water mixable oil and alkyd fast drying oil colour.

The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.

Mop and Wash Brushes

Soft, natural hair brushes for soft blending and washes.
Winsor & Newton also provide a selection of Mop and Wash brushes for water colour which are made from a variety of natural hairs, providing excellent colour carrying capacity and flow control.

Cotman Brushes

The most widely used synthetic water colour brush. Excellent colour carrying & shape retention.Cotman brushes are a range of pure synthetic water colour brushes of the highest quality that have been created using the same skills, generated over many years, as those used in making the finest sable brushes.
The secret of the Cotman brush lies in the fibres. By blending fibres of differing thickness the three most important qualities sought after by an artist are achieve. The thicker fibres contribute strength and spring whilst the thinner fibres improve colour carrying capacity. Together they retain a perfect point, time after time. The handles are specifically designed to provide balance and comfort when painting, the ferrules are made from high quality nickel-plated brass which helps to prevent corrosion, clogging of hair and enables easy cleaning.

Light Ox Hair Mottler (Escoda)

The Escoda 2234 is a flat, straight-edged brush for painting broad passages, washes, and for varnishing. The long, tightly crimped ox hair gives it superb control, and a soft, fluid stroke. Escoda specially cures each handcrafted brush to ensure resiliency and performance for years to come. The 2234 has a matte-varnished wooden handle, and a seamed, nickel-plated ferrule.

Light Ox Hair Highliner (Escoda)

Escoda takes great care in curing their brush hair so that what results is a tool that offering remarkable spring and resilience. Their Ox hair flat is an excellent choice for medium-size stroke work, edging and striping.

NAM Series 220 Albino is a short handled white Taklon student brush.

Kazan Mop Brush (NAM)

A brown pure Russian squirrel mop brush. Extremely soft and delicate, will not leave voids or hair tracks. Forms an excellent point and is extra absorbent, allowing the brush tip to hold paint exceptionally well. The hardwood handles are lacquer finished for long life. It is ideally suited to ink, water colour and other water based paints.

Chung-king Natural Bristle Sash Brushes (Escoda)

The traditional "sash" is a round brush with a blunt, tapered tip that covers large areas, but with soft edges. It's a favourite of faux finish and decorative painters working on fresco's, murals, and other large projects. The round shape delivers outstanding control, so it can be used for smaller, more detailed applications as well.
